Switzerland may be Europe’s playground and the South of France its nightclub, but Italy has for centuries been the continent’s hotbed of culture, romance and more recently, very fast cars – and nowhere is this better represented than at Tuscany’s Castello di Casole.

Located just over an hour from Grosseto private airport, the Castello towers over a 4,200 acre estate of stunning Tuscan countryside.
“Originally, the building was a watchtower dating back over 1,000 years,” states Federico Galligani, the hotel’s General Manager.
“It was built by the army of Siena which was at war with Florence. It was then transformed into a castle, which was rebuilt in the 15th century and part of it is still standing today.”

Following extensive reconstruction work in the 19th century by the aristocratic Bargagli family of Siena, the estate changed hands in the 1960s, when it became home to acclaimed film director, Luchino Visconti.
A seven year, €100m refurbishment transformed the Castello into the top-rated luxury hotel that it is today. It has since been included in Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List, which only features another 25 hotels for the whole of Europe.
With the hotel only housing 39 suites in addition to a small number of private villas and penthouses – privacy and tranquillity is a given.

Presiding over rolling hills dotted with handsome poplar trees and sprawling olive groves, the hotel’s tranquil setting is occasionally broken by the roar of highly tuned V8 engines, as it now hosts ‘Red Passion’ days, where visitors spend a day putting Ferraris through their paces on the surrounding scenic routes and a nearby racetrack.
“The roads surrounding the Castello are beautiful and are often used by car companies for their launches,” claims Signor Galligani.
“The roads just wind away, with the beauty of the view completing the experience.”
Participating drivers receive a morning briefing at the hotel by the Ferrari team, before heading out through the Chianti Hills towards Siena. Here they get to test their supercar of choice to the limits on a purpose built racetrack.
As for the choice of vehicles, Eric Cucchi – the hotel’s Director of Operations – elaborates: “We can get just about anything you would want – the Berlinetta and the FF. We can get classic cars and we can also get Lamborghinis.”
