The second instalment of Victor’s best-of global event round-up this month
UK | The Rembrandt Exhibition
7 July–14 October
This blockbuster show traces the impact the Dutch master has had on British painters, from William Hogarth right up to Frank Auerbach and the present day. Part of Edinburgh Art Festival, it’s also a chance to drop in on the Fringe to see if you can talent-spot the famous faces of tomorrow.
SWITZERLAND | Verbier Festival
19 July–5 August
Banish all thoughts of that famous musical with a programme of classical concerts in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Now in its twenty-fifth year, expect a celebratory mood and performances from those at the top of their respective trees: the pianist Martha Argerich and Evgeny Kissin have both confirmed their attendance.
UK | Whitstable Oyster Festival
21-22 July
If seafood is your thing, this is the festival for you. With a fast-growing reputation as one of Kent’s smartest seaside addresses, Whitstable goes bonkers for bivalves for a whole weekend. Starting with the Landing of the Oysters that makes the famous Oster Eating Competition possible, there’s also the Tankerton Food Fair for those in need of a bit of variety.
MONACO | Red Cross Ball
27 July
The high point of Monaco’s summer social calendar, this fundraiser doesn’t mess around: with superstars like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder all having strutted their stuff at soirées past, tickets are snapped up fast. Held in the Monte-Carlo Sporting Club’s Salle des Etoiles, say hello to the glitterati at its most glam.
