An ode to Gulfstream’s G650

With a client list that includes the likes of Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, it is fair to say that the Gulfstream G650 is the go-to jet for those seeking the absolute pinnacle of air travel. Scarce though they may be in the on-demand market – Gulfstream claim there are as little as 560 in service worldwide – there still exists a handful in the market available to Victor members.

With Gulfstream’s recent announcement that the iconic G650 surpassed 1 million flight hours worldwide, we thought it would be a good time to provide our members with something of an ode to one of the most iconic aircraft models in aviation.

When the G650 entered service in 2012, followed by the G650ER in 2014, the aircraft redefined business aviation. According to Gulfstream, both the G650 and G650ER models have achieved more than 125 city-pair speed records, and the G650ER still maintains the record for the farthest fastest business jet flight in history.

In 2014 the G650 received the Robert J. Collier Trophy for its performance, safety and efficiency innovations, and continues to set industry standards. In 2022, the aircraft completed a flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a business-jet industry original equipment manufacturer first.

Both models boast a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.90, with a long-range cruise of Mach 0.85, allowing for swift and comfortable travel over vast distances. Their maximum operating Mach number of 0.925 further highlights their exceptional speed.

The Gulfstream G650 is designed with versatility and luxury in mind, featuring space to comfortably accommodate up to 17 passengers, depending on the interior configuration. This flexibility allows for various seating arrangements to suit different travel needs, from executive meetings to family vacations. In addition to its generous passenger capacity, the G650 boasts ample storage space, capable of holding up to 18 cases. This makes it a great choice for travelling with sports equipment such as bikes and surfboards.

The aircraft also offers an unparalleled in-flight experience with its thoughtfully designed interior. One of its standout features is the inclusion of 16 of the largest windows in the industry, allowing passengers to enjoy panoramic views and an abundance of natural light throughout their journey. This feature not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the cabin but also contributes to a more refreshing and comfortable atmosphere.

The interior is further complemented by its forward or aft galley options, providing flexibility in design and functionality. These galleys are equipped to cater to all culinary needs, ensuring that gourmet meals can be prepared and served with ease. On some aircraft, there is also a dedicated crew compartment, allowing the crew to rest and perform their duties efficiently without disturbing the passengers.

Moreover, Gulfstream aircraft can fly at remarkable altitudes, in fact, the ‘highest-flying private jet’ title currently goes to the Gulfstream G650, which reaches a service ceiling of 51,000 feet. Despite this, Gulfstream technology means that they can acclimatise the inside of the cabin to significantly reduce the sense of fatigue commonly associated with flying at high altitudes. We speak more about this in our article about ‘The Gulfstream Difference’.

Speaking on the milestone of 1 million flight hours, Mark Burns, President of Gulfstream stated, “We could not be more pleased that the G650 program — synonymous with business aviation excellence — has been serving our customers for over a decade,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream. “This milestone is a true testament to our precision manufacturing, state-of-the-art design, world-class Gulfstream Customer Support, and commitment to continuously improve our customers’ operating experience.”
